U.S. Institute of Peace

Think, Act, Teach, Train.

Established in 1984 by an Act of Congress and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan, the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) was established to “develop fully a range of effective options, in addition to armed capacity, that can leash international violence and manage international conflict.”

The Mission:

The United States Institute of Peace is an independent, nonpartisan institution established and funded by Congress to increase the nation’s capacity to manage international conflict without violence.

The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) is transforming approaches to international conflict. USIP draws on a variety of resources in fulfilling its congressional mandate: staff, grantees, fellows, research, education, training, innovation, outreach, publications, and national and international partnerships.

USIP’s Strategic Goals are:

To help prevent, manage, and resolve violent international conflict both within and between states;

To promote post-conflict stability and development;

To increase peacebuilding capacity, tools, and intellectual capital worldwide;

To build and shape the field of international conflict prevention and management and to professionalize its practice;

To build knowledge and create innovative tools for peacebuilding;

To bridge research and practice in preventing, managing and resolving violent conflicts;

To teach, train, inform policymakers, practitioners, students and the public about the challenges of conflict prevention, management and resolution and how to respond to those challenges.

Think, Act, Teach, Train

USIP’s approach is to think, act, teach and train across the spectrum of international conflict prevention, management, and resolution, and help societies in the period of post-conflict stabilization.

Think

USIP generates research and analysis of international conflicts through our programs, grants, and fellows. We identify best practices and develop conflict management strategies and capacities.

Act

USIP leverages expertise from decades of working in conflict zones to prevent conflict, manage it where it occurs, and aid in the transition from war to peace by using tools and approaches on the ground.

Teach

USIP’s “Academy for International Conflict Management and Peacebuilding”

is preparing practitioners to work effectively in conflict zones abroad. Through our courses, distance learning, educational outreach, like the National Peace Essay Contest. USIP has a strong educational focus on students, professionals and the public.

Train

USIP trains practitioners and those in conflict zones on how to use tools and approaches to conflict prevention and management. Through our training programs, our Academy and our computer simulations, we provide innovative strategies and practical skills.
